Fry Bread

Description

Fry Bread is a staple food made by most Native American tribes, and if you've never had it before, you're in for a treat. They're made with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand. You can eat fry bread on its own to accompany all kinds of dishes, or use them for Navajo Tacos, which I did in the accompanying video.

Instructions

  1. To make Fry Bread

Mix together flour, baking powder and salt in large bowl. Cut in fat, using fingertips to break it up, until you are left with a slightly crumbly flour mixture. Add warm water a little at a time because you may not need it all. You only need enough to soak up all the flour and for the dough to form a ball. Knead with hands on flat surface until you have a smooth ball of dough. Place dough ball back in the bowl and rub a little oil or fat on top to prevent it from drying. Cover with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let rest for 20 to 30 minutes. Once dough has rested, heat a frying pan with oil about an inch deep. Cut dough into eight equal parts and form each piece into a ball. Flatten with hands and stretch and rotate until you have a round disk, similar to a tortilla. Poke a hole in center of fry bread to ensure even cooking, then place in hot oil to fry first on one side and then the other until golden. Remove from oil and let excess oil drain onto paper towels. Enjoy while hot.
