Even before I Painted it red, I was already in love with this Pay Phone. I have secretly wanted one ever since I was a kid and saw an episode of the Brady Bunch in which Mike Brady had a working pay phone installed in the house in order to curb those darn Brady kids from talking to their friends for hours on end. They were SO popular, I just wanted to be a Brady kid! To have a pay phone in my house??? That would have been the ultimate! Which would explain why, as old as I am now, when I saw this grimy old pay phone at an auction, I just had to have it.
I got it for $20. What I need it for, I have absolutely no idea! I don’t even know if it works, or how I would even find out. I just couldn’t wait to clean it up and paint it.
It took quite a bit of elbow grease to wipe off the years of grime it had collected. But I knew I could get it to look shiny and new again. And wouldn’t it be cool if I painted it some nifty color? I thought about lime green or turquoise, but I’m so impatient. Heaven forbid I would have to spend 15 minutes driving to the store and then another 15 minutes back! So, instead, I went through my existing bin of paints, and chose from there.
How perfect! I love red. Especially, a high gloss red. It’s bold and fun. And now I can picture this pay phone hanging in some artsy 20-something year old’s loft apartment. I’m feeling nostalgic. Today’s 20-year old has never even used a pay phone, let alone carried 25¢ in their pocket in case of an emergency. Heck, I remember when it was 10¢, but I digress!
Here’s the Painted Pay Phone now. It’s just a cool piece of art that beckons our American history. As much as I love it, I’ve decided to sell it to someone younger than myself who can appreciate it… Someone who isn’t so old and practical… Someone infinitely cooler and more popular… Someone like… Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!
Uber Cool!!!
Oh my, George Glass!! Really, GEORGE GLASS??? You’re killing me, I’m laughing so hard. You have no idea how much useless trivia I know about the Brady Bunch. Thanks for checking out my blog and making me smile
Thank you for taking us down Brady Bunch memory lane, I have many great memories of watching the Brady Bunch after school. Your pay phone turned out groovy!
Wow! That is amazingly cool. It absolutely had to go to Marcia ha!
