What started out as a small project, has now turned into a full-fledged Bedroom Makeover.  I’m talking painting walls, painting furniture, upholstering a headboard, adding feet to a captain’s bed, and the list goes on.  How did it happen?  The same way all my projects do.  I change one thing, and before I know it, it leads to another…and another.  And this time, I’m dealing with my teenage daughter, who changes her mind almost as often as she changes outfits.

You may recall from a blog I posted a few months ago that she asked if I would paint an ombré accent wall in her bedroom for her 15th birthday this November.  Initially, I wasn’t too thrilled about it because it would mean getting rid of the floral swirly pattern and pearlescent stripes I hand painted for her only few years ago.  In case you missed it, here’s a look:

I loved this tweenage bedroom.  Still, the thought of an ombré wall did appeal to me…because I’m kind of addicted to painting, and I love challenges.  So I embraced my inner Ombré.  In case you don’t keep up with the latest trends…or have a teenage kid who keeps you in the loop, all the while making sarcastic remarks like, “Oh-eM-Gee, Mom, you didn’t know?”…then ombré is a simple color gradient from lighter to darker or vice versa.  You see it everywhere these days..from hair and fingernails to clothing and even food.

Ombré

With the ombré wall all figured out in my head, and with just days to go before my daughter’s 15th birthday, what happened!?!  My daughter changed her mind!  She informed me that what she’d really like is to get rid of her captain’s bed in lieu of a day bed…and, get this…she now wanted white walls.  That’s right.  WHITE!  (Insert screeching violin from the shower scene in the movie Psycho here.)  Can you even picture me painting white walls???  ARE YOU KIDDING???  That’s when I realized this whole teenage rebellion thing was getting out of hand!

So how did I handle it?  The only way I knew how.  I sorrowfully began taking down her once treasured stuffed animals, wondering where the years went, and how it was that I now had no control.  And when my pity party finally came to an end, I became more inquisitive about HER style.  Turns out, she has some pretty cool ideas…and together we set out to transform her room.

In the coming days I’ll share this Bedroom Makeover step-by-step.  You’ll learn how to make and upholster your own headboard… You’ll see what I did with her capatain’s bed after taking it all apart… And, you’ll find out if I broke my own rule and painted her walls white.  (I can hardly wait to show you!)

Stay tuned…
